Sailing Classes at Desborough
Desborough Sailing Club has a friendly and varied mix of sailing classes, giving members plenty of choice whether they enjoy close class racing, handicap racing, cadet sailing or cruising on the Thames. From British Moths, National 12s and Solos to Lasers, Toppers, handicap dinghies and an active cruiser fleet, there is something for different ages, experience levels and sailing styles.
This page gives an overview of the main classes sailed at DSC, including when they race, how active each fleet is, and where newer members may be able to get involved.
British Moth
There are currently 10 boats in the British Moth Fleet at DSC.
Class racing for British Moths is on Sunday afternoons from the end of March through to the end of September. All other club handicap races are open to the class except Sunday Trophy Handicap Series
The Club hosts an annual Open Meeting for the class in early September
Lasers & Roosters
There are currently 15 boats in the club laser/rooster fleet and 2 club boats available for hire.
National 12
There are currently 9 boats in the National 12 Fleet at DSC.
Class racing for National 12s is on Sunday afternoons from the end of March through to the end of September. All other club handicap races are open to the class except Sunday Trophy Handicap Series.
The Club hosts an annual Open Meeting for the National 12 Class in May.
Handicap Class
The Handicap Class at DSC is open to any dinghy up to 14′ in length. Currently this is the largest fleet at DSC and includes 9 GP14’s, 6 Enterprises, 10 Toppers, 3 Mirrors, and an assortment of other classes. The Topper is a popular class amongst the our active Cadet Membership.
There is handicap racing solely for boats in the handicap fleet on Sunday afternoons from the end of March to the end of September, and all other club handicap races are open to all boats in the handicap fleet.
The Club holds an annual Regatta for the Handicap Class.
National Solo
There are currently 7 boats in the National Solo fleet at DSC.
The fleet achieved class status in 2005 and racing is on Sunday afternoons from the end of March through to the end of September. All other club handicap races are open to the class except Sunday Trophy Handicap Series
Cruiser Fleet
Desborough has large and active cruiser fleet consisting of about 20 boats. Mooring is provided by the club on the Thames and in the adjacent Millbrook Creek. Trailer-Sailor berths are available on-shore, close to an efficient ‘cruiser’ slipway, at very attractive rates.
We have an active racing program for the cruisers and the fleet races on a handicap pursuit basis. It is surprising how close these large boats are at the end of an hour and a half race.
We are looking to increase the interest in this fleet and as such welcome newer members to take part crewing in our races and to come and experience the JOY of sailing in a cruiser.
The cruiser fleet also enjoys an active social side with events such as club treasure hunts where the whole club takes to the water in the cruiser fleet to look for clues down this picturesque part of the Thames. Members also get-together and take part in cruises both up and down The River, and it is not unknown for members to make water-borne visits to nearby river-side hostelries.
